Press Release May 23rd 2006 Wayne County's Old Stone Jail OpensAs a result of its local historic significance and the public’s interest, the Wayne County Historical Society will again open to the public this year the county’s Old Stone Jail, which has stood between the county court house and 10thStreet in Honesdale since 1859. The Old Stone Jail will be open from 9:00 to 12:00 AM, the first Saturday of the months of June, July, August, and September.Volunteers, coordinated by Richard Kreitner, will be on site during the above times to welcome the public inside and to provide historical information about the building and the Wayne County Historical Society. If you would like to be a jail docent please contact Richard or Sally Talaga at 253-3240 or wchs@ptd.net. Other jail museums exist, including the one in Jim Thorpe, PA, a popular tourist attraction. In 2001 it had 14,000 visitors and employed eleven high school students as summer docents. The Commissioners of Wayne County made this possible by giving approval to the Wayne County Historical Society to open their historic building to the public.
